About FreelanceToolkit UK

Free, no sign-up tools and editorial guides for UK freelancers, sole traders, contractors and small businesses.

What this site is

FreelanceToolkit UK is an editorial site for UK freelancers, sole traders, contractors and microbusinesses. It combines free, no-sign-up tools (calculators, generators, templates) with practical guides covering UK tax, VAT, accounting, banking, insurance, mortgages, international payments and company formation.

It was built because every existing alternative either charges a subscription, requires an account, or hides the actual mechanics behind a wall of marketing.

What we publish

The site is organised into eight topical hubs that index the full editorial scope:

Plus a long tail of comparison pages, calculators, tools and decision guides — see the homepage for the full index.

Editorial approach

Plain English. No jargon for jargon's sake. Specific worked examples. Honest about uncertainty. Affiliate links disclosed at the top and bottom of every commercial page.

Every factual claim about UK tax rates, regulatory thresholds, deadlines and provider features is verified against the primary source at the time of writing. Tax figures use the latest HMRC documentation; Companies House requirements use the gov.uk official guidance; provider pricing is verified against the provider's published rate card.

For the full picture see our editorial policy, sources & methodology, how we test tools, and affiliate disclosure.

What we cover, what we don't

We cover: UK tax for the self-employed (Self Assessment, Class 4 NI, IR35, allowable expenses), Ltd company operations (Corporation Tax, dividends, year-end accounts), VAT mechanics (registration, MTD, reverse charge, FRS), insurance, banking, mortgages and international payments. The clusters reflect the operating questions UK freelancers actually have to answer.

We don't cover: Tax advice for non-UK jurisdictions, regulated financial advice, legal advice on specific cases, or speculative content on tax avoidance. Where a question requires a qualified professional, we say so.

Privacy first, by design

Every tool runs entirely in your browser. No data is sent to a server. When you save a draft invoice or log an expense, that data lives in your browser's localStorage — on your device only. Clear your browser data and it's gone.

The site is supported by display advertising and affiliate partnerships. See our Privacy Policy and Affiliate Disclosure for what that means in practice. There is no paywall, no premium tier, no email collection.

Sources, accuracy and updates

The figures used in the tax calculator follow HMRC's published 2025/26 rates and bands. The VAT invoice template is informed by HMRC's VAT guide (Notice 700). Provider pricing and features are verified against published rate cards.

We refresh tax figures, regulatory bands and provider details on a rolling basis — annually for major UK tax band changes (April), more frequently for affiliate provider pricing updates. Major regulatory changes (MTD ITSA April 2026, IR35 reforms etc.) trigger same-week updates across affected pages.

None of this is professional accounting, tax, mortgage, insurance or financial advice — for any complex situation, please consult a qualified professional.
