Target gross turnover (take-home + tax + expenses) divided by realistic billable days per year (typically 150-220 for UK freelancers).
Gives negotiation headroom and covers rate volatility. Also protects if your billable days come in below target.
150-200 for most UK freelancers, accounting for holidays (25 days), sickness (~5 days), admin (~30 days), and non-billable Fridays. 220 is optimistic; 260 (all working days) is unrealistic.

If you're VAT-registered, your day rate is quoted ex-VAT and VAT is added on the invoice. Doesn't change the underlying calculation.
