Software usually handles it. But a lightweight spreadsheet works for freelancers with < 5 invoices/month and is a useful backup even if you use software.
Simple formula: Date Paid minus Due Date. Positive = late; negative = paid early; blank = not yet paid.
Bank transfer, direct debit, Stripe, PayPal, cheque — whatever you actually receive. Useful for spotting which methods are slowest.
Any invoice past its Due Date and not marked Paid. Start friendly reminders at 3 days overdue, formal reminders at 14 days, statutory-interest reference at 30 days.
Most software (FreeAgent, Xero, QuickBooks) export CSV — you can map columns to this template.
