Total UK business population
The UK has approximately 5.5 million private-sector businesses per the Business Population Estimates (BEIS/DBT). Of these:
- Around 3.1 million are sole proprietorships (individuals trading in their own name)
- Around 2.1 million are companies (mostly private limited companies)
- The remainder are partnerships
Business size distribution
The vast majority — ~95% of UK businesses have 0-9 employees. Only around 5% have 10+ employees. Medium and large businesses (250+ employees) account for well under 1% of the business population but employ a majority of UK workers.
Non-employing businesses
Around 4 million UK businesses (roughly 75%) have no employees — these are the "one-person" businesses, dominated by sole traders and one-person limited companies. This is where freelancers overwhelmingly sit.
Employment and turnover contribution
Small businesses (0-49 employees) collectively employ around 45% of the UK private-sector workforce and generate roughly 50% of private-sector turnover per BEIS/DBT data.
